Scaling and root planing is a deep cleaning below the gumline that is used to treat later stages of gum disease. This procedure involves two parts and begins with scaling. Our dentist or hygienist will first remove all plaque and tartar above and below the gumline. It’s important that we clean down to the bottom of the pocket during this step.
Root planing then involves smoothing out your tooth roots in order to help your gums reattach to your teeth. Scaling and root planing may take multiple visits to our office and could require the aid of a local anesthetic.
After Care Post-Procedure
Scaling and root planing as a form of gum disease treatment can result in teeth sensitivity for a few days after the deep cleaning. Your gums are also likely to feel swollen and tender. Yet, there are ways you can ease discomfort and prevent infection.
Our dentist may prescribe you a pill or mouth rinse to help ward off any infection from forming. You may also have medication inserted directly into the pocket that was cleaned but this will be discussed with you beforehand.
Another appointment will be scheduled to see how your gums have healed and if your pockets have gotten any deeper. You may need additional treatment if they have.
Preventing Gum Disease
Avoid gum disease altogether by regularly practicing good oral hygiene. If you develop a habit of performing positive behaviors, your oral health will only improve.
